New Delhi: Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani will join the Congress on Tuesday, September 28.
According to sources close to Kumar, he and Mevani will join the grand old party in the presence of Rahul Gandhi at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.
Kumar is a former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) and Mevani has a big presence in the Dalit community in Gujarat.
Prior to joining the Congress, both Kumar and Mevani are expected to go to Shaheedi Park at ITO to garland Bhagat Singh’s statue, a day after the freedom fighter’s 114th birth anniversary. Rahul Gandhi is likely to join them at ITO. Youth Congress workers are also expected to be present at the venue in “large numbers”.
Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal and working president of Gujarat Congress, Hardik Patel are also likely to be present when Kumar and Mevani come to the Congress fold.
It is learnt that Congress is toying with the idea of giving Kumar a role in the Bihar state Congress and Mevani in Gujarat, which will go for polls by the end of 2022.
