Bhubaneswar: Dharma Productions, helmed by Karan Johar, is in the process of acquiring the remake rights of Odia film Bou Buttu Bhuta, starring Babushaan Mohanty, Archita Sahu, and Aparajita Mohanty.
The company has officially announced negotiations to purchase the remake rights through a public notice in Komal Nahta’s Film Information magazine by its Chief Legal Officer Rakhee Bajpai Tiwari. The acquisition includes all Indian and world languages as well as derivative rights. This will allow Dharma Productions to develop, produce, distribute, and exploit remakes across multiple media and platforms. The rights also extend to dubbing and subtitling the film in all languages, globally and in perpetuity.
It further mentioned that Babushaan Films Private Limited, is the sole and lawful owner of all intellectual property related to Bou Buttu Bhuta. Interested parties, if any, have been asked to make their claims within 15 days of the notice to avoid waiving any rights.
Reports said that the decision to acquire Bou Bhuttu Bhuta aligns with Karan Johar-led Dharma Productions’ strategy of diversifying its portfolio beyond Hindi-language originals and tapping into narratives that can be reimagined for a larger market.
Bou Buttu Bhuta, released earlier this year on June 12, emerged as the highest Odia grosser of all time despite competition from films like Housefull 5 and Sitaare Zameen Par.
A horror-thriller-comedy, the film revolves around a fish-farmer, who gets possessed by a ghost while returning home from work, resulting in madness in the village, particularly for his sorceress mother and his love interest.
