Srinagar: Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away at his Srinagar home late on Wednesday evening. He was 92.
The face of separatist politics in Jammu and Kashmir, hardliner Geelani had been ailing for long and had quit politics and Hurriyat in 2020.
He suffered a minor heart attack and was admitted to the hospital in March 2018.
“Saddened by the news of Geelani sahab’s passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’aala grant him jannat & condolences to his family & well wishers,” former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti has tweeted.
Security has been beefed up in Kashmir Valley following his death late on Wednesday evening.
