Puri: Raids were carried out on Thursday by officials at several khaja shops and making units near Shree Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s Puri following information about unhygienic food preparation.
During the inspection, conducted by food safety, supplies and police officials, khaja prepared in unhygienic conditions was identified and handed over to the municipality for destruction.
Penalties were also imposed on the shopkeepers, while domestic LPG cylinders found during the raids were seized for further verification.
The joint operation involved the food safety officer, civil supply officer and the municipality’s enforcement team, along with the police.
According to Puri City DSP Rashmi Ranjan Mahapatra, here was information that various khaja manufacturing units were preparing the sweet under unhygienic conditions. In view of public safety, a joint raid was conducted.
The food safety officer identified the items that were prepared in unhygienic conditions and these were handed over to the municipality for destruction.
The civil supply officer also seized domestic gas cylinders, which are undergoing further verification. The process for imposing fines is also underway.
Officials said that the inspection was carried out as part of the measures to ensure food safety around the area near the 12th century shrine.
