Cuttack: Taking cognisance of a case pertaining to encroachments in and around Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves in Bhubaneswar, the Orissa High Court has directed the authorities to physically inspect the site and submit a report.

A bench of Chief Justice Chakrdhari Sharan Singh and Justice Sabitri Ratho heard the PIL in this matter and ordered an assessment.

According to sources, Additional Government Advocates (AGA) L Samantray and S Pattnayat will visit Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves in Bhubaneswar and apprise the High Court on the ground situation.

An additional Collector-rank officer will accompany the AGAs during the visit. The official will ensure removal of encroachments and no harm to the ancient sites in the process.

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for September 25 prior to which the AGAs will submit their findings before the High Court, added sources.

Udayagiri and Khadgiri caves have historical, archaeological and religious significance. There are many caves and temples in these ancient sites which are very important for the Jain community.

The case was filed following allegations of that some parts of the hills were encroached with illegal construction coming up over the past few years, the sources added.
