Bhubaneswar: The historic Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills, emblematic of Odisha’s ancient heritage and Emperor Kharavela’s legacy, are set for the much-awaited transformation.
According to sources, the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the National Monument Authority (NMA) for the integrated development of the site, focusing on both heritage conservation and tourism enhancement.
The proposal includes better connectivity between the twin hills, improved access roads, visitor zones, a well-designed pathway connecting key monuments, and upgraded amenities like an information centre, cafeteria and rest areas. Separate entry routes will be laid for the Jain temple and the Barabhuja temple. An amphitheatre will also be developed for cultural and tourism-related festivals.
Special arrangements will be made for differently-abled visitors with dedicated walking paths and electric vehicle access. The project also includes landscaping and the conservation of around 450 species of medicinal plants found in the area.
Modern parking facilities for buses, cars, and two-wheelers will also be developed to streamline visitor access and enhance the tourism experience.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will assess the plan to ensure the historical integrity of the monuments remains protected. Work will commence once NMA grants approval.
