Dhenkanal: The emerging concept of cinema is driven by intelligent acting. Applauding the narrative being put forward in movies today, film-critic, Piyush Roy said, “The era of hte Khans is gone. It is the media which is constantly flogging a sinking ship.”
With the arrival of new stars like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajkummar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana, people have started appreciating the content more than the stars and their stardom. “Only star appeal will not guarantee success. The narrative has to move with time as well and with one or two movies a year. The Khans are not making any difference out there,” he added.
Movies like ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, ‘Zero’ and ‘Dabangg 3’ have failed to impress the audience despite being backed by a good star cast. Besides this, the emergence of OTT (Over-the-top) platforms is the next big thing in cinema and their absence from that could be a factor impacting their respective stardoms, he said.
Moreover, the credit for their commercial success goes to their PR (Public Relations) teams due to which they have been appearing on the covers of a few magazines, endorsing brands in advertisements etc. “We have to acknowledge that it is the era of new stars and only good content is the way forward, not stardom,” said Roy.
He was addressing the audience on the theme ‘Appreciating Cinema’ on the occasion of ‘Filmy Chakkar 3’ at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication on Wednesday.
