Dhenkanal: The killer elephant that went on a rampage killing two elderly persons in Jagatpur area of Odisha’s Cuttack after it strayed from its herd, appears to be missing its calf at a rescue centre.
The elephant, which had gone berserk after entering into the urban area last week, was tranquilised by wildlife officials and brought to the rescue centre at Kapilas in Dhenkanal district.
However, the authorities at the rescue centre have noticed that the animal is often getting restless and violent as it is separated from her calf. Appropriate steps are being taken by the officials to stop the 20-year-old elephant from getting violent.
While the elephant, tied with chains, is kept at a place with wooden fences around it, it is being fed banyan leaves and branches by the authorities. They have also taken necessary measures for the treatment of the animal, which has sustained deep injuries during its intrusion into the urban area at Jagatpur.
After being chased, the calf had separated from its mother. As the animal killed two elderly persons, locals got panicked and tried to chase it away. In the process, it sustained deep injuries.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Dhenkanal, Prakash Chandra Gogineni said the veterinary doctors are looking after the ailing elephant which is being administered antibiotics for quick healing of wounds.
