Bhubaneswar: A team of doctors at KIMS Bhubaneswar successfully pulled off a challenging procedure on a 10-month-old baby who faced a life-threatening condition.
An infant from Raurkela, after having accidentally swallowed a metallic pin with sharp pointed ends, had it removed by a multidisciplinary team.
The potentially dangerous object was lodged in the male child’s food pipe.
The baby was vomiting repeatedly when his parents rushed him to KIMS on August 18.
Investigations and imaging revealed that the metallic pin was stuck in the upper part of the food pipe, close to the throat.
It was quite a challenge for the doctors as the sharp, pointed pin could have caused serious internal injury and led to fatality had it pierced the wall of the food pipe.
Therefore, the medical team — comprising specialists from ENT, Gastroenterology and Anaesthesiology departments — had to plan very carefully so that no further damage was caused to the 10-month-old.
The doctors used an advanced endoscopic procedure to slowly push the pin into the stomach and then retrieved it through the mouth using a flexible endoscope passed through the food pipe.
After the procedure was completed without any complication, the baby was taken off the breathing support safely and kept under observation in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for a day.
The delicate procedure was carried out through coordinated efforts of Dr Kabikanta Samantaray, Dr Manas Ranjan Rout, Dr T Rajmohan Rao, Dr Dibyalochan Praharaj and Dr Sneha, along with the supporting medical and nursing teams.
The baby’s parents expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses and other staff members for the care and attention provided to their child and for successfully removing the dangerous object.
KIIT and KISS founder Dr Achyuta Samanta hailed the ingenuity of the doctors in treating the case and wished the baby a healthy and happy life ahead.
