New Delhi: Kiran Rao directed cult film Laapataa Ladies is going to be India’s official entry for Oscars 2025.
The movie, which was released earlier this year, has attained a cult status. The movie, which had newcomers, has been loved by fans ever since its release on OTT platform Netflix.
The movie is going to be released in Japan too.
Kiran’s earlier work was the critically acclaimed Dhobi Ghat (2011).
The story revolves around two rural Indian brides who accidentally switch places during a train ride in 2001. The plot takes the audience on an emotional journey filled with poignant moments, humour, and social commentary. The film brings attention to issues faced by women in rural India, especially when it comes to gender roles, education, and empowerment.
Starring a fresh ensemble of talented actors such as Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, the film provides a unique storytelling experience. The rural backdrop, complemented by nuanced performances and strong direction, has resonated well with both critics and audiences.
In a recent interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI), Kiran Rao shared her hopes for the film to be considered as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards. When asked about the possibility, Kiran expressed that it has long been her dream to see one of her films represent India on the global stage. She mentioned that her dream would be fulfilled if Laapataa Ladies were selected, adding that she is hopeful, but understands the complexity of the selection process.
Kiran Rao emphasised that the final decision rests with the Film Federation of India (FFI), the body responsible for selecting India’s entry to the Oscars. She expressed confidence that the best film would be chosen, and acknowledged the competitive nature of the process, given the vast talent in the Indian film industry.
