New Delhi: Lakhs of farmers from across the country are on way to Delhi to participate in the ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ which will be held at Ramlila Maidan here on March 20.
According to Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ is being organised to press for a legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP).
“The Centre must fulfil the assurances it gave us in writing on December 9, 2021 and also take effective steps to mitigate the ever-increasing crisis faced by farmers,” SKM leader Darshan Pal said during a press conference on Sunday.
SKM, an umbrella body of farmers’ unions, spearheaded an agitation for over a year against the Central government’s three controversial farm laws, which were ultimately repealed.
The farmers suspended the movement in December 2021 after the government assured them that pending demands, including withdrawal of cases lodged against farmers during the agitation and a legal guarantee for MSP, will be considered.
SKM has also demanded dissolution of the committee on MSP which was constituted by the Centre, alleging that it is contrary to the demands of farmers.
Their demands include pension, debt waiver, compensation for those who died during the farmers’ stir and withdrawal of the Electricity bill.
