New Delhi: Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is set to bring the story of R&AW founder Rameshwar Nath Kao to the big screen.
The production house has teamed up with Leo Media Collective for a large-scale theatrical feature film, which is slated to release on August 11, 2028, coinciding with the Independence Day weekend.
The yet-untitled film was announced on September 21, 2026, marking 58 years since the foundation of R&AW.
The makers are planning the 2028 release to commemorate the agency’s 60-year journey.
Speaking about the film, Karan Johar said, “Leo media has painstakingly been researching and dramatising this narrative with passion for the past two years, we want this film to be a gripping story based on true facts to pay homage to RAW and honour their milestone year with a solid motion picture … all of us at Dharma are so excited to get going.”
Based on Nitin Gokhale’s Gentleman Spymaster, the espionage-actioner is expected to go on floors by mid-2027.
While details about the director and cast remain under wraps, sources indicate that an A-list actor will spearhead the project.
Set between 1955 and 1971, the film will chronicle the events that led to the need for an external intelligence agency, the formation of R&AW and its maiden mission during the 1971 war against Pakistan.
The film will explore the legacy of R N Kao, widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Indian espionage.
Over the years, several R&AW chiefs have spoken highly of Kao, highlighting his professionalism, strategic thinking and contribution to the agency.
The project also marks Dharma Productions’ reunion with Leo Media Collective following their collaborations on ‘Bad Newz’ and ‘Kesari: Chapter 2’.
