Bhubaneswar: While some COVID-19 vaccines such as Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna have been launched for emergency use in parts of the world, here are some other vaccines in development. The WHO and other experts have said the world needs different types of vaccines to cover the entire globe.
SPUTNIK V
The Russian vaccine has been approved by many countries for emergency use but it awaits Phase 3 trial results. It is based on the combination of two adenoviruses called Ad5 and Ad26. It is claimed to be 90 per cent effective and is given in two doses. It can be stored in normal refrigeration (2-8 degrees Celsius) and is expected to be priced below USD 10 per dose. It could be available from February, 2021.
VECTOR INSTITUTE
Russia is also developing 2nd vaccine by Vector Institute which uses a coronavirus spike protein. It is in Phase 3 and can be stored under normal refrigeration for upto two years.
CONVIDECIA
China’s CanSino Biologics is also under Phase 3 trials but has been given to Chinese military in limited supply.
CORONAVAC
China’s other vaccine by Sinopharm has also been approved there for emergency use and is given in two doses.
NOVAVAX
US drugmaker Novavax’s vaccine is under Phase 3 trials. It can be stored at 2-8 degree Celsius.
JOHNSON&JOHNSON
This US vaccine is one of the few that can be administered as a single shot though trials are on for efficacy of two doses. It can be stored upto 3 months at 2-8 degree Celsius, and upto two years at -20 degrees Celsius.
