Know How Many Cyclones Hit Odisha After 1999

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has been hit by eight cyclones after the Super Cyclone in 1999, informed Revenue and Disaster Management Sudam Marndi in the State Assembly on Friday.

In reply to a query of Congress legislator Tara Prasad Bahinipati, the minister said that 160 people had died in these eight cyclones – Phailin in October 2013, Hudhud in October 2014, Daye in September 2018, Titli in October 2018, Phethai in December 2018, Fani in May 2019, Bulbul in November 2019 and Amphan in May 2020.

Property worth Rs 31945.80 crore were also damaged.

As against Odisha’s demand of Rs 29480.37 crore central assistance for relief and restoration work, the Centre has provided only Rs 5285.65 crore from the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF), he added.

The Super Cyclone, which ranks among the worst natural disasters in India, killed nearly 10,000 people. It made landfall in Paradip around noon on October 29, 1999. 

More than 3.5 lakh houses were destroyed, several villages were completely washed away, more than two lakh animals were killed and 25 lakh people were marooned.

The cyclone had badly hit the infrastructure, cutting the state of the rest of the world for an entire day.
