New Delhi: The no-confidence motion moved against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar by the Opposition was rejected by the deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, who dubbed it as ‘flawed.’ He stated that the motion was moved to ‘mar’ the reputation of the Vice President.
Singh stated that the motion was drawn in ‘haste,’ pointing out that the mandatory 14-day notice required to move such a motion was not provided. He also noted that Dhankhar’s name was misspelt in the notice.
But the protocol that was adhered to correctly by the Opposition was obtaining the signatures of 60 MPs at the time of submission of the motion last week.
He cited these reasons in the ruling presented in the House by Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody. The Deputy Chairman stated that the impeachment notice is part of a deliberate effort to undermine the nation’s constitutional institutions.
The motion, submitted under Article 67(B) of the Constitution, was backed by the Samajwadi Party, the Trinamool Congress and the AAP. It led to an uproar in the Rajya Sabha.
Speaking in favour of the Chairman in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, said the Opposition MPs didn’t have the right to be members if they couldn’t respect the Chair. “We have taken an oath to protect the sovereignty of the country,” he reminded the MPs.
