Kolkata: Besides massive protests by the medical fraternity and civilians, the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital here has sparked a political slugfest between the West Bengal government and Opposition.
In a sensational claim on Wednesday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP may have had a role in the horrific crime.
Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar referred to purported screenshots of WhatsApp chats from the murdered doctor’s team which mentioned drugs and a sex racket.
“In the doctor’s team, many such topics have come up in their WhatsApp group, some screenshots like drugs, racket, sex racket have also reached us. The names of a TMC MP and his nephew are coming up again and again, I don’t know what happened but something is wrong,” Majumdar said during a press conference.
Alleging a cover-up by TMC, the BJP leader questioned why the party’s female MPs have been silent on the case.
“Despite having so many women MPs in TMC, none has said much on this issue. Even one TMC MP, 3 MLAs studied in the same medical college but some tape has been put on their mouths as well,” he added.

Majumdar said police informed the parents guardians that their daughter had committed suicide without any investigation. The way attempts were made to suppress the issue, it shows that the West Bengal govt was trying to save someone,” Majumdar said.
‘Reclaim The Night’ Protest
Women in Kolkata and several other parts of the state will hit the streets around midnight on Wednesday as part of the ongoing protests.
Titled ‘Women, reclaim the night’, the protests remind everyone of the aftermath of the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder in Delhi.
The protest, described as, “For women’s independence on the midnight of independence,” will begin at 11.55 pm.
Posters with various locations of the protest have been shared on social media.
