Bhubaneswar: Doctors of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar on Wednesday staged a cease-work stir to protest against the alleged sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Barring emergency services, OPD, IPD and other facilities were affected due to the strike today affecting patient services.

Additional Superintendent AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Dr Pravas Tripathy said, “The strike is on since today morning. However, other faculties of our institution – Professors, Additional Professors and Assistant Professors are attending patients. There is some pressure though since resident doctors are a major workforce.”

Demanding justice for the victim, proper investigation and safety of doctors, senior and junior residents, and medical students of AIIMS Bhubaneswar ceased work with white headbands and black badges on arms as a mark of protest.

“There are issues – one of our resident doctors was raped and murdered brutally, the rapists should be hanged. We work for 36 hours at workplace where there are no proper changing rooms or rest rooms. Besides, the security of doctors is a major concern which needs to be addressed on priority. The strike will continue,” a group of protesting doctors said.

The woman, a second-year postgraduate student in the chest medicine department, was found semi-nude with multiple injury marks in the Kolkata hospital’s seminar hall on Friday. She was on duty the previous night. Preliminary autopsy reports suggest she was sexually abused before being murdered, prompting her father to allege that she was raped and killed inside the hospital.
