Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday carried out a raid at the residence of former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh in Kolkata in connection with a corruption probe, following various allegations of irregularities surfacing against him.
The CBI is also conducting searches at 14 other locations in Kolkata. These raids comes a day after the central probe agency filed an FIR on Saturday.
Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had transferred the probe into corruption charges against Ghosh from a Special Investigation Team, formed by the state government. The court had given the directive after hearing the plea filed by Akhtar Ali, former colleague of
Ghosh at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered, leading to massive outcry among people from all walks of life in the country.
Akhtar Ali, who was the hospital’s deputy superintendent till 2023, moved the high court on Wednesday to request an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the alleged malpractices and financial scams during Ghosh’s tenure.
What are the allegations against Sandip Ghosh?
In his plea, Ali has accused Ghosh of illegally using unclaimed corpses. He has also alleged that Ghosh would illegally sell biomedical waste, and pass tenders against the commission paid by medicine and medical equipment suppliers. Ghosh has been accused of putting pressure on students to pay amounts ranging between Rs.5 and 8 lakh to pass exams.
Ali claimed that in July, 2023, he had lodged a written complaint at the state vigilance commission against such irregularities. But, no action was taken against Ghosh.
The medical college is at the centre of protests following the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor in a seminar hall in its premises on August 9. So far, a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, had been arrested in connection to the case, which was transferred to the CBI from Kolkata Police.
