Koraput Boy’s Innovation Wins Top Honours At ISRO Competition

Bhubaneswar: Koraput-born Girish Vaisyaraj has won top honours at an ISRO competition for his innovative use of a Mono camera for measuring the 3D coordinates of an object.

Girish, a third year student of Electronics and Telecommunications at NIT, Rourkela, said his innovation uses a single camera to measure the real time, height and distance of an object. It can be used in many applications including surveillance, he added.

Girish’s camera won the first prize in the Innovative Design Project competition at NIT, Rourkela, which was held as part of ISRO’s birth centenary celebrations of Dr Vikram Sarabhai in various cities in the country.

Various competitions and exhibitions for both college and school students were held from September 16 to 20 to mark the occasion.

Girish was felicitated at the award ceremony on September 20 by the guest of honour, Prof V Adimurthy (ISRO honorary professor).

“With the help of this Mono vision camera, we can find out the real time 3D coordinates of any desired object. The real time height and distance of an object from the camera can also be measured. This is a primitive mathematical research. It can be used further in many applications including surveillance,” Girish said.

“Along with my studies, I am conducting simultaneous researches. Many more projects will come out soon,” he added.

The young innovator said he will take up a job after his studies to pay off his bank loans. “Then I will try to commercialize my products. But my aim is to get into Civil Services,” he said.

Girish said he was inspired by great minds like Dr Vikram Sarabhai and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to contribute to the country in the long run.
