Berhampur: As many as 95 gamblers were arrested and 14 cases registered with Ganjam police raiding gambling dens across the district on Saturday and early Sunday.
In Berhampur alone, 68 gamblers were caught and 7 dens busted. The other gamblers were arrested from elsewhere in the district. Police said they have seized Rs 4.25 lakh in cash from the accused.
The raids came on the auspicious occasion of Kumar Purnima, when people in southern Odisha districts indulge in unbridled gambling as part of the celebrations. But perceived as the harbinger of fortune and wealth, Maa Lakhsmi has brought only misfortune to gamblers in Ganjam this time.
