Baripada: A labourer engaged in bridge construction work under Biju Setu Yojana died after falling into a trench at the site near Badasahi under Betanati police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Thursday.
The worker, Deepak Singh of Rasagobindapur in the district, accidentally fell into a water-filled pit. The pit was dug for erecting a pillar. After falling, he got stuck in a machine engaged in excavation works which hindered other workers from rescuing him. He died on the spot, said sources.
Soon after, irate local villagers machines manhandled an official of the construction company and damaged machines besides staging a dharna near the site placing with the body. They were demanding compensation for the family of the deceased.
Police reached the spot and brought the agitators under control. The injured official has been admitted to district headquarters hospital in Baripada.
