Cuttack: A lady police officers was injured in an assault by a retired Army jawan and his supporters in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Tuesday.
According to sources, police were on lookout for retired jawan Saroj Das after he threatened people with a sword in Harirajpur under Banki police station in the district on Friday. On being informed, the police rushed to the spot and tried to nab Saroj. But he chased the police personnel with the sword and managed to escape.
On Tuesday afternoon, the police got information that the jawan along with some of his supporters was holding a meeting at a field in Similipur. A police team led by SDPO Gyan Ranjan Mishra along with Fire Brigade went to the spot to capture Saroj with water cannon. But they could not use water spray as a lot of villagers were also present there.
Meanwhile, sub-inspector (SI) Madhusmita Behera accompanied by some police personnel went to the field and confronted Saroj. A heated exchange of words ensued between police team and Saroj and his supporters. This led to a tussle.
Madhusmita, who sustained injuries in the attack, was rushed to sub-divisional hospital at Banki. Her condition was stated to be stable.
