Kabul: In a ghastly attack on hundreds of worshippers who had gathered for prayers on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramzan, a powerful explosion ripped through a mosque in the Afghan capital today.
A Taliban spokesperson said at least 10 people were killed in the blast and 20 wounded, reported AP.
The source of the blast could not be ascertained immediately known and no group has claimed responsibility yet.
Local residents, however, said the number of casualties is likely to be far higher as the Khalifa Aga Gul Jan Mosque was packed with worshippers.
So massive was the explosion that areas in the neighbourhood of the mosque shook up, said residents who feared for their own safety.
The roof of the mosque was reportedly blown off.
Taliban securitypersons cordoned off the area, as several ambulances rushed to the site — end of a narrow street in east Kabul, where Afghanistan’s majority Sunni Muslims reside.
It’s the latest in a series of blasts in Afghanistan, which is under Taliban rule since August 2021.
There were similar attacks on mosques targeting minority Shiite Muslims, claimed to have been carried out by Islamic State group’s regional affiliate, IS-K.
