Bhubaneswar: The last of the old school mechanical signal system called Semaphore signal was removed on Wednesday. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) is upgrading it to a modern Multiple Aspect Colour Lights signalling system that does not have mechanical arms.
The upgradation process will take two days. Another such Semaphore Signal is now located at Tureikela Road Station near Kantabanji in Balangir district. This station is located 50 kms from Titlagarh station.
In 2018, ECoR had removed Semaphore signals at Lakhana, Khariar Road, Nuaoada Road, Bhimkhoj, Bagbahara, Komakhan, Harishankar Road and Tureikela Road. All these stations are located on the Titilagarh-Raipur tail line section.
The modern signalling system ensures higher electrical control reliability, have no distance limitations, and allows the signal controls to be placed conveniently together. The system also has better monitoring, interlocking, and detection of failure conditions than the mechanical process, an ECoR release stated.
