Athagarh: Maharani Rasamanjari Devi, the last queen of Tigiria estate, passed away at her residence due to old age-related ailments on Sunday. She was 96.
Located in present-day Tigiria block of Odisha’s Cuttack district, the estate was one of the princely states of India during the British Raj. Her last rites will be performed at the royal crematorium on Monday, sources said.
Rasamanjari Devi was the wife of last king of Gadajat regime, Brajaraj Birabar Kshatriya Champatisingh Mohapatra and served as an MLA from 1977 to 1980 having been election from Athagarh Assembly constituency on a Janata Dal ticket.
As soon as the news of the queen’s demise spread in the area, people from all walks of life, including Animal Resources Development Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain, visited the queen’s residence to pay their last respect.
