Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Nivar is likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram during mid-night of Wednesday or early hours of Thursday.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted that it will make landfall as a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph.
The storm over southwest Bay of Bengal has moved westnorth-westwards with a speed of 11 kmph in last six hours and lay centred about 240 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 250 km east southeast of Puducherry, the Met Office tweeted on Wednesday.
Under its influence, Hyderbad has been experiencing heavy rainfall since this morning, while flood alert has been sound in and around Chennai.
Latest reports suggest that though the Tamil Nadu capital will witness heavy downpour, however, it wouldn’t experience the ‘eye of the storm.’ Puducherry will bear the worst.
The Tamil Nadu government has so far shifted 24,166 people, including 3,948 children, from low-lying areas/unsafe buildings to 987 relief centres in the state.
Around 1,200 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.
