Bhubaneswar: Odia web series ‘Barang 1999’ on OTT platform Kanccha Lannka has landed in a controversy after being issued a legal notice for its content.
The trailer of the series, which was released on social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, depicts the struggle of a gangrape survivor in 1999.
Anjana Mishra, who was a victim of the crime in the same year, has issued the notice through her lawyer Bibhu Prasad Tripathy to Kanncha Lannka of Glass Dreamz Entertainment Private Limited, the OTT platform’s cofounder-cum-managing director Bibhu Prasad Rath, cofounder-cum-executive director Chitta Ranjan Nayak, Camera Queen Production, its founder Himadri Tanaya Das, YouTube India, Facebook developed by Meta and managing director and editor of Argus Pratham Broadcast India Private Limited.
Advocate Tripathy told the media that the trailer of ‘Barang 1999’ has made false and defamatory descriptions of the gangrape incident with an intention of harming the reputation of Mishra. “It (the trailer of the web series) has concocted versions of the incident. Its makers have only changed the gangrape survivor’s name to Amrita Padhi,” he said.
He said the recipients of the notice have been asked to take down the web series from the OTT platform and social media sites within 72 hours. If they failed to do so, Mishra will initiate civil and criminal proceeding against them, he added.
Chairman and co-founder, Kanccha Lannka, Akshay Parija told Odisha Bytes: “Yes, we have received a legal notice which we will examine and take necessary action. Our recently released web series “Barang 1999” is a piece of fiction and it has not portrayed any one in bad light. We would request viewers to watch it and make their own assessment.’’
