In a judgment which is very relevant in a country which continues to witness crimes against women, four men in their 30s were on Thursday handed life imprisonment for attacking a woman with acid in April 2015.
The sessions judge in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru also slapped a penalty of Rs 5 lakh each on the convicts. The amount of Rs 20 lakh will be given as compensation to the victim who ran a beauty parlour, said the court.
“The victim had lost an eye and had to undergo 18 surgeries after the attack. At present, Sumana works as a contract labourer in the Agriculture Department of Karnataka,” said an advocate linked to the case.
