Mumbai: In a tragedy with few parallels, a 46-year-old Mumbai businessman was crushed to death under a lift after he accidentally stepped onto its shaft.
According to a police official, the incident took place on Sunday evening when Vishal Mewani — the director of retail chain Kohinoor Electronics — went to meet his friend at the two-storeyed Buena Vista building in Worli area.
He called for the lift, but stepped into its shaft after opening the lift channel. He couldn’t move out of the way and the lift — which was coming down – crushed him.
On being alerted, Fire brigade officials rushed to the building and pulled out Mewani. He was taken to Breach Candy Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
“He spoke to his wife 30 minutes before the incident and told her that he was going to meet his friend. On the basis of primary information, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered and further investigation is underway,” Worli police station’s senior inspector Sukhlal Varpe said.
