Balasore: Excise officials are a terror for liquor smugglers. But this fear turned tragic when an alleged smuggler was drowned after he jumped into a river to evade arrest in Balasore district, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Sapan Majhi, a resident of Puruna Baleswar village.
According to reports, Excise officials had received a tip-off that Sapan and three others were planning to smuggle liquor. The officials laid a trap and intercepted the four bike-borne smugglers on Monday evening.
The other three were caught, but Sapan jumped into a nearby river and went missing. Fire Services personnel launched a search operation and Sapan’s body was fished out on Tuesday morning.
