Angul: Vehicular movement came to a halt on National Highway 55 at Kanjara in Odisha’s Angul district on Saturday as locals blocked the road protesting the death of a cyclist after being hit by a unknown vehicle.
Sources said the accident took place at Kanjara under the jurisdiction of Jarapada police station. The deceased was identified as Sabit Pradhan.
Angry over the accident, residents of the area staged a road blockade demanding compensation for the family of the deceased. As a result movement of vehicles on both the sides of the NH 55 was disrupted.
Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, were stranded on both the sides of the NH created a massive traffic jam.
The locals have alleged that there is a spurt in accidents in the area due to lack of speed breakers and high speed of vehicles.
Onbeing informed, police personnel rushed to the site and tried to pacify the crowd. The road blockade was finally lifted after two hours following an assurance from the police that the family of the deceased will be compensated appropriately.
The police have launched a probe and efforts are on to track the vehicle and apprehend its driver.
