Nayagarh: An irate mob on Thursday went on the rampage, blocking National Highway-57, following the death of an infant at Nayagarh district headquarters hospital here.
According to available information, the eight-month-old boy was admitted to the hospital after swallowing a bottle cap while playing in his house at Golgola village under Nuagaon block in the district. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The family members and the locals alleged that the child died of medical negligence.
Alleging that the child died mainly due to absence of paediatricians in the hospital, they resorted to vandalism and blocked the National Highway near the hospital for several hours, disrupting vehicular movement on the road connecting Khurda and Balangir.
Police rushed to the spot and attempted to pacify the angry mob. But, the protestors continued their agitation following which the cops resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.
On the other hand, Dr Monalisa Swain said that the patient’s condition was very bad when he arrived at the hospital for treatment.
