Baripada: Hundreds of locals of the Karanjia area of Mayurbhanj blocked the roads while forest officials were shifting two elephants, Mahendra (55) and Yuvraj (15), from Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary in the district to Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Angul on Tuesday night.
Congress party members led the road blockade near Singada Chhak on NH-18 under Karanjia police limits.
According to sources, the two tuskers were being shifted to Satkosia Tiger Reserve to help track the new tiger couple that was recently shifted from Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks in Madhya Pradesh to the sanctuary.
The locals opposed the move as the tuskers were an asset in the area and had been helping in controlling wildlife crimes since the past one decade.
