Like most, Madhulita Mohapatra’s life has been impacted by the lockdown, which has been necessitated by the outbreak of novel coronavirus.
But, as the Odissi dancer says, this “house arrest” hasn’t been able to deflate her spirit.
“I can’t imagine life without dance… it’s my life,” asserts the Bengaluru-based Madhulita, who engages in performing, teaching and promoting Odissi through Nrityantar, their dance institution.
“I’m a people’s person, surrounded by my students and dancers most of the time. And it’s dance that has helped me cope with this lockdown easily. I wake up early, and my day starts with daily practice and yoga,” informs Madhulita.
In normal times, her senior students come over every morning before going to office. But now, she conducts a series of online classes throughout the day.
“Despite social distancing, dance continues to keep us all connected. Practising, sharing our joy and passion via live video conferences and Nrityantar online chat rooms, we continue to celebrate dance as always,” says Madhulita.
Having travelled continuously for the past few months to deliver a series of performances, Madhulita appreciates this period of self-isolation as it has given her an opportunity to read, think and work on some fresh choreographic ideas.
“I also celebrated my birthday amidst this lockdown, when my students came together online in a virtual party,” she revealed.
“Yes, these are challenging times. But I believe it is temporary and everything will be fine soon. There is always a rainbow after the storm,” Madhulita signed off on an optimistic note.
