Bhubaneswar: A man in Koraput has lost a staggering Rs 75.58 lakh to cyber frauds, according to reports.
The victim, Susanta Kumar Behera, a resident of HAL Township in Sunabeda area, has lodged a complaint with the cyber cell of Odisha Crime Branch in Cuttack.
According to the reports, Behera had bought seven insurance policies online in 2018. He was assured of a hefty bonus after a month. He had lodged a complaint with Bima Lokal in Bhubaneswar in July 2019 after he did not receive the bonus.
This February, a woman called Behera, identifying herself as a Bima Lokpal officer from Kolkata. She asked him to deposit Rs 1 lakh in a particular bank account towards registration fee. Behera did as told.
A few months later, two men called up Behera posing as RBI officers and told him to comply with the woman’s instructions. She further told Behera that he would receive around Rs 1.5 crore as payout and kept seeking more money from him as Income-Tax, GST and other charges.
The victim borrowed from friends and money lenders, and transferred a total of Rs 75.58 lakh to different bank accounts between February and October this year.
