Look Out For Larger, Brighter Supermoon Tonight

Look out for a larger, brighter moon in the skies on Tuesday evening. The best views will be after sunset and if you’re only going to see the moon once this year, this is the ultimate time to do it.

The moon tonight will be closest to earth during its full phase and therefore, appear 14 per cent larger in diameter and 30 per cent brighter than this year’s smallest full moon in September, reported The Times of India.

The report further said that a good view of the event will be possible around 6pm in Delhi, 6.30pm in Mumbai and 5.20pm in Kolkata, around half-an-hour ahead of the sunset at these places.

Super snow moon, mid-winter moon or the hunger moon, as it is called, is a full moon that will be closer to earth than usual. When the moon is full and is at a point in its orbit that is closest to the Earth, it is called Supermoon.

According to Nasa, “snow moon” is the historic name given to the second full moon of winter by certain native American tribes in the US. It is called the snow moon because of snowfall this time of the year. Heavy snowfall is also the reason for its other name, “hunger moon”, as food is not easily available in this season. Some of its other names are ice moon and storm moon.

So, better keep a watch because if you miss it, you won’t get a Supermoon as big or bright in the sky again for another seven years: until 2026.
