Bhubaneswar: The low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal has become well marked and may intensify into Depression by Wednesday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.
“It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over southwest & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by afternoon of tomorrow, October 22. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & south Andhra Pradesh coasts and intensify further during the subsequent 24 hours,” it further stated.
Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea as conditions may become rough over the Bay of Bengal during this period.
The fresh weather system is unlikely to have any significant impact in Odisha. However, some parts of the state may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) from October 21-25 due to moisture-laden north-easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal blowing towards the state and local heating.
The IMD has warned of thunderstorm activity in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Cuttack on October 21.
Similar weather may prevail in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on October 22 and Nabarangpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri on October 23.
Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts on October 24 and Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj on October 25.
Though there is no warning thereafter, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is expected in many places across the state during the subsequent 5 days.
