Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has formed over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and it is likely to intensify further into a depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal around October 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

“Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area has formed over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify further into a depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal around 23rd October,” according to the morning bulletin.

The weather agency has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and at one or two places in rest districts of coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Angul, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput on October 23.

With the likely increase in the intensity of downpour during the next 2 days, rain may play a spoilsport during Dussehra festivities in Odisha. “Light to moderate rain is likely in some districts of coastal Odisha on October 24 with the intensity of downpour increasing in these areas from October 25,” a post on X (formerly Twitter) said.

“This would happen under the influence of an easterly,” said regional head of IMD centre H R Biswas.

Warning

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal from October 20-23 and westcentral Bay of Bengal from October 21 onwards.

Squally weather (wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph) is likely over southwest Bay of Bengal and off Tamil Nadu coast on October 19 and then the adjoining south and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal from October 20 and westcentral of Bay of Bengal and off Andhra Pradesh coast with wind speed of 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph from October 22.
