Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, raising the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain in several parts of Odisha in next few days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to further intensify and move across north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha during the next 48 hours.
“Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation, a low pressure has formed over West-central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha. It is likely to move west-north-westwards and become well marked during next 24 hours. It is likely to move across North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha during next 48 hours,” the weather agency said.
Under the influence of the system, several areas of Odisha are likely to receive a heavy to very heavy rain.
For the next 24 hours, the IMD has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for some places over the districts of Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Likewise, yellow warning about heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for some places of Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Balangir, and Nuapada during the period.
Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also likely at one or two locations in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Rayagada.
Rainfall and thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in different parts of the state up to the morning of August 17,
As sea conditions may remain rough, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast and over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, from August 13 to 16.
