Low Pressure Over Bay In 24 Hours; IMD Issues Orange Alert Of Very Heavy Rain For Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Amid the forecast on likely formation of a low pressure over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain for some places in Odisha for two days.

According to the midday bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is likely at isolated places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Kandhamal and Angul districts till 8.30 am on Tuesday. Yellow warning of heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) has also been issued for isolated places in Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Balangir, Sonepur, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to continue during the day across the state and people have been advised to take shelter at safe places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.

On September 5, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is likely at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur. Heavy rain may also lash isolated places in Rayagada, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Sonepur and Sambalpur.

The weather agency has warned of temporary waterlogging at low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas on these two days. There is also a possibility of inundation of low-lying agricultural fields. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field and keep livestock/domestic animals at safe places.

The intensity of rain in the state is likely to decrease thereafter.

On September 6, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nuapada, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, and Balangir. Similar warning has been sounded for the subsequent 24 hours (September 7) with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Balangir, Nabarangpur and Nuapada. There is no heavy rain warning thereafter.

Notably, the state recorded 815.2 mm rainfall against its normal value of 952.5 mm till September this monsoon season with 10 districts, including Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur, in deficit zone and the rest 20 in the normal category.
