Low Pressure Over Bay In 24 Hours: Very Heavy Rain Alert Sounded In Odisha, Squall@55Kmph Off Coast

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued orange warning (heavy to very heavy rain) for Odisha for two days from Tuesday when the cyclonic circulation over West Central & adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensity into a low pressure area.

“A cyclonic circulation over West Central & adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal now lies over Westcentral & adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region during next 24 hours. The system is likely to concentrate into a depression over the same region around July 26 and move slowly westnorthwestwards across north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts.”

According to the IMD bulletin, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely to occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangapur, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam till Tuesday morning with light to moderate rain/thundershower at most places in south interior Odisha and at many places in remaining parts of the state.

Orange warning has been issued for the next two days.

On July 25, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at isolated places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada. Yellow warning (heavy rainfall) has also been issued for one or two places in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Mayurbhanj. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is very likely to occur at most places in south and coastal Odisha and at many places in rest districts.

On July 26, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapad aand Balangir. There is also a forecast for heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) at one or two places in Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Bargarh. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is very likely to occur at most places in the state on this day.

Under the influence of anticipated low pressure and its further intensification and strong monsoon flow, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph is very likely along & off Odisha coast, northwest adjoining West central Bay of Bengal from july 25-27. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea along & off Odisha coast, Northwest & adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal during this period, the MeT office further said.

It has also warned of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas and possibility of wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses and some damages of kutcha roads. There is also a possibility of landslides in vulnerable hilly areas of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal.

The intensity of rain in the state is likely to decrease thereafter with no further orange warning.

On July 27, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at one or two places in Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul and Keonjhar. Light to moderate rain/thundershower may also occur at most places in interior Odisha and at many places in the coastal districts of the state.

On July 28, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may lash one or two places in Balasore, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak. Light to moderate rain/ thundershower is also likely at many places in Odisha.
