Low Pressure Over Bay In 48 Hours; Heavy To Very Heavy Rain Forecast For Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Heavy to very heavy rain may lash Odisha during the next four days under the influence of a low pressure area, which is likely to over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department informed on Monday.

“A cyclonic circulation lies over Northeast & adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood during next 48 hours.”

The weather agency further said that widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in some districts of Odisha during next 4 days. It added that thunderstorms with lightning activity may occur during the next 2 days, and advised people to take shelter at safe places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.

While yellow warning of heavy rain along with thunderstorm and lightning has been issued for two days, the intensity of downpour may increase from September 20.

SEPTMEBER 18

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada.

Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.

SEPTEMBER 19

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Kandhamal, Sundargarh and Kendrapada.

Thunderstorm with lightning may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Balangir and Kalahandi.

SEPTEMBER 20

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at one or two places in Angul, Keonjhar, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Bargarh, Kalahandi and Kandhamal

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) also likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Nuapada, Sundargarh, and Ganjam.

SEPTEMBER 21

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh.

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Koraput, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

There is no heavy rain warning thereafter.

The weather agency has also warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses, inundation of agriculture field, some damage to kutcha roads and houses, landslides/mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas and occasional reduction of visibility, leading to traffic jams, in urban areas during intense spells of rain. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field and keep livestock at safe places.

According to SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), moderate to heavy rainfall may occur at most places of coastal, north and west Odisha on September 19 and 20 under the influence of the circulation and the low pressure area. The system is expected to shift to neighbouring Chhattisgarh from September 20 night, the bulletin added.

The consecutive wet spells have helped reduce the rain deficit in Odisha, which has recorded 1013.0 mm rainfall against the of 1076.6 mm till September 18 this monsoon season. While two districts have received excess rain and 24 are in normal category, only four have recorded a shortfall.
