Bhubaneswar: The Low-Pressure area over Southwest & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal has moved northeastwards and lay over Westcentral & adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.
It is very likely to move northeastwards and concentrate into a Depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by morning of May 24. It is likely to move northeastwards, intensify further and reach northeast & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by May 25 evening, according to the morning bulletin.
“There has been an increase in the wind speed and cloud accumulation around the active low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal today, indicating that it has become more dense. Sea surface temperature is currently between 30-32°C in most parts of the Bay of Bengal,” senior scientist, Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Umashankar Dash informed.
He further stated that the conditions are conducive for further condensation of the system.
The weather agency has predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places in Balasore district of Odisha during May 25-27
Light to moderate rainfall may also occur at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places at North & South 24 Parganas, East Medinipur districts of West Bengal. Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur on May 25-26.

The national weather forecaster, however, is yet to forecast the system’s further path and whether it will intensify into a tropical storm. “More details like the system’s path, landfall time and point will emerge in a day or two,” said IMD DG, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
