Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is most likely to be formed over the Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a release on Monday.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation of the North Andaman Sea and neighbourhood, a low-pressure is likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining the north Andaman Sea around October 13. The system is likely to move west-north-west and reach the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts as a well-marked low pressure in the subsequent 48 hours around October 15, the IMD said.
The formation of the low-pressure area is getting delayed since the cyclonic circulation has remained stationary over the same region, it added.
The national weather agency, however, has not confirmed further intensification of the low-pressure.
According to the forecast by the Czechoslovakia-based private weather agency Windy and the India-based private weather agency Skymet, the cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea and neighbourhood will intensify into a cyclonic storm.
The Windy forecast has claimed that the cyclonic storm will make landfall between Puri and Paradip either on the night of October 16 or the following morning. Under its influence, there will be extremely heavy rainfall in the north and central coastal Odisha and West Bengal.
The Skymet Weather Services said that there is a possibility for the low-pressure area formed over the South China Sea to merge with the one which is likely to form over the North Andaman Sea and neighbourhood. This will further strengthen the system and it may concentrate into a cyclonic storm.
