Bhubaneswar: Following India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast on the formation of a low-pressure area over North Bay of Bengal around June 11, the Odisha government on Monday asked district collectors to take all possible measures against heavy rainfall.

Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena wrote that as the southwest monsoon is most likely to advance into most parts of Odisha under influence of the low pressure, there will be widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall in most parts of the state from June 10 to 14.

The SRC directed collectors to closely monitor the situation, and also advised districts under orange and yellow warning to remain prepared to meet waterlogging and localised flood-like situation including in urban areas.

The collectors were also asked to alert Block Development Officers and Tehsildars and the Water Resources, Rural Development and Works departments to ensure proper maintenance of roads, constant monitoring of the situation in low-lying areas and remove rainwater from these areas if required, functioning of district control room round the clock and furnish situation report to SRC office.

The SRC directed collectors of coastal districts to ensure that fishermen did not venture into deep sea in central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Bay of Bengal on June 10, and along and off the Odisha coast and north Bay of Bengal adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal from June 11 till further notice.

Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over the central Bay of Bengal adjoining north Bay of Bengal will make the sea condition rough to very rough.
