Bhubaneswar: There will be heavy rainfall in 14 districts of Odisha due to a low-pressure area that is set to form over Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
Senior Scientist at Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar Umashankar Das said the south-west monsoon has become active in Odisha. The western end of the monsoon trough running along the foothills of the Himalayas and the eastern end now passes through Hardoi, Patna, Jamshedpur, Paradip and thence southeastwards to the east-central Bay of Bengal.
“Apart from this, a cyclonic circulation lies over the west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal off south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts with a tilt towards the south-west direction. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is going to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next 24 hours. As a result, there will be heavy rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in most parts of the districts in the south and coastal Odisha and some parts of the north interior districts,” Das said.
He said heavy rain will lash the state for three days up to August 18 under the influence of the cyclonic circulation. There will be more rainfall in the subsequent three days till August 21 under the influence of the low pressure, he added.
