Bhubaneswar: Odisha will receive heavy rainfall in the next 24-48 hours due to a low-pressure formation off the southern coast of Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department warned on Friday.

HR Biswas, the director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, has said that the low-pressure area is likely to develop over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining the east-central Bay of Bengal by Friday.

“It is very likely to concentrate into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours. It is then expected to move west-northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coast as a depression around October 11 afternoon or evening,” he said.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing into deep sea.

Meanwhile, the IMD will release dynamic impact-based cyclone warnings for coastal districts in the upcoming retreating monsoon season to minimise damage to property and economic losses, Director-General Mrutunjay Mohapatra has said, according to a report by Times Now .

Mohapatra said that the new system will provide specific warnings, as in if a district is likely to be hit by winds gusting to 160 kmph, the new mechanism will warn about the kind of infrastructure that could possible get damaged.
