Pune: Adar Poonawalla claimed on Wednesday that ‘Made in India’ COVID-19 vaccines have performed better than Pfizer and Moderna.
“The Covid-19 vaccines which have been made in India are providing more protection against the (coronavirus) disease than mRNA vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna,” the Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO told ANI.
“It’s good that vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna have not been introduced in India, because in countries like the US people have taken the second and third booster dose and yet many are still getting infected with corona… but in India, our vaccines have given good protection,” Poonawala said.
He added that in some countries where mRNA vaccine was given, “many people were hospitalized and cases were reported in those countries because they were not providing good protection against the viral infection.”
Poonawalla informed that India has exported Covishield vaccine – which is the Oxford-AstraZeneca developed vaccine produced in India — to over 80 countries.
“We have exported 10 crore doses of Covishield vaccine to more than 80 countries so far. The demand for COVID vaccine has decreased now due to declining cases,” he added.
