Bhopal: An Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Madhya Pradesh police was run over by a tractor-trolley carrying illegally mined sand in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol late on Saturday.
The deceased ASI Shahdol Mahendra Bagri was visiting the site to check illegal mining in the area along with two constables Prasad Kanoji and Sanjay Dubey.
The trio was trying to stop the speeding tractor carrying sand when it ran over Bagri killing him on the spot. Kanoji and Dubey managed to escape unhurt.
According to police sources, driver Raj Rawat and the truck owner’s son Ashutosh Singh have been arrested, while the owner of the tractor Surendra Singh is on the run.
“The driver of the tractor has been arrested and an inquiry is on. In the inquiry, it was revealed that the son of the owner of the tractor was also involved in it. He has also been arrested, “Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Shahdol DC Sagar told NDTV.
A case has been registered against the driver and the sand mafia father and son, Ashutosh Singh and Surendra Singh, for murder and illegal sand mining under the Indian Penal Code and Mines Act respectively, Times of India reported.
A reward of Rs 30,000 has been announced to the one who can give any information leading to the truck owner’s arrest, police said.
It may be mentioned that illegal sand mining is rampant in Madhya Pradesh. In November last year, a Revenue Department official was crushed to death by a tractor allegedly belonging to a sand mafia in Shahdol.
