Madras High Court Restrains Patanjali From Using ‘Coronil’ Trademark

Chennai: Controversies continue to chase Patanjali. In the latest setback, the Madras High Court (HC) has barred Patanjali from using the Coronil trademark.

On Friday, Justice CV Karthikeyan passed an interim order, valid till July 30, on the plea by Chennai-based company Arudra Engineering Private Limited. The company claims that it owns the trademark “Coronil” since 1993.

According to media reports, Arudra Engineering Pvt Ltd has said that even when the product sold by Patanjali is very different from their’s, identical names would still amount to infringement of Intellectual property rights. Moreover, the company’s right over the trademark is valid until 2027, according to the Republic World report.

The company is into manufacturing business of chemical and sanitisers to clean heavy machines and containment units. On the other hand, Pantanjali is Baba Ramdev’s consumer goods company that produces mineral and herbal products.

Patanjali’s Coronil was approved as an immunity booster by the AYUSH ministry after the former’s claim of it being a cure for COVID-19.
